What type of screening is done for skin cancer?

If an area on the skin looks abnormal, a biopsy is usually done. The doctor will remove as much of the suspicious tissue as possible with a local excision. A pathologist then looks at the tissue under a microscope to check for cancer cells.

How often should you have a skin cancer screening?

Once a year, or more often if you are at a higher risk of skin cancer, for a full-body, professional skin exam. To help you prepare and make the most of your appointment.

What age should you start getting skin cancer checks?

Skin cancer in children is rare, but does occur. Melanoma, the most dangerous of the three primary types of skin cancer, is the most common cancer diagnosed in teens and young adults.
